CD298, encoded by ATP1B3, is a 42 kD type II transmembrane protein that forms the β3 subunit of sodium-potassium ATPases. These enzymes are composed of one α and one β subunit, with four α isoforms and three β subunit isoforms described. Na+/K+ ATPase couples ATP hydrolysis to the development of an ionic gradient by pumping sodium and potassium ions in opposite directions across the plasma membrane. CD298 is broadly expressed on many tissues, including all leukocytes.
