Growth differentiation factor 15 (GDF-15) is the member of the transforming growth factor-β (TGF-β) superfamily proteins. Human GDF-15 genes include 2 exons and 1 intron. Signal peptide is removed from pre-pro-GDF-15. Inactive pro-GDF-15 in the cytoplasm is dimerized by a specific disulfide bond, cleaved at the RXXR cleavage site in the Golgi apparatus, and secreted as mature GDF-15. GFRAL (Glial cell line-Derived Neurotrophic Factor-family receptor α-like) is the receptor of GDF-15.
GDF-15 is an endocrine hormone that plays an important role in inflammation, stress, and cell survival. It has been identified as a biomarker for various diseases, including heart failure, kidney disease, diabetes, cancer, and rheumatoid arthritis.
